Scammers did not wait much time to join Meta’s new application, Threads, as high-level crypto profiles on Twitter reported that there are imposter accounts on Threads.

Since its launch on July 5, the number of signups for Threads reached 98 million, which is still far away from Twitter, which has around 450 million users, according to Cointelegraph.

However, crypto figures on Twitter warned against fake accounts on Threads that are impersonating others or themselves. And indeed, decentralized finance platform Wombex Finance tweeted on July 8 an image that there is an imposter account for it on Threads, warning that it is a scam.

Moreover, an NFT influence, called Leonidas, called on his followers on Twitter to take care that large NFT accounts are impersonated by scammers on Threads, adding that he created an account on Threads to face such imposter accounts.

A Twitter user replied to a tweet for Jeffrey Huang, known on Twitter as Machi Big Brother, saying he has a Threads account, while he was tweeting about his official account on Threads.

According to a report by Web3 and blockchain security company Beosin, the total amount of cryptocurrency lost due to hacks, scams, and rug pulls amounted to $656 million in the first half of 2023.

The $656 million includes $471.43 million lost in 108 protocol attacks, an additional $108 million in various phishing scams and $75.87 million over 110 rug pulls, the report said.

Beosin pointed out that the first six months of 2023 witnessed a decline in the amount of crypto stolen due to hacks compared to the same period in 2022 and the last six months of 2022 also.

“Approximately $215 million of stolen assets were recovered, accounting for 45.5% of all stolen assets. In contrast, in 2022, only 8% were recovered. $113 million of stolen assets were transferred to mixers: $45.38M into Tornado Cash and $68.14M into other mixers,” Besoin noted.
