Toyota GR Cup To Record Drivers’ Performances on Polygon Network
Toyota GT Cup
Toyota Gazoo Racing GR Cup North America announced that it would reward the winners with digital trophies and record the drivers’ performances on the Polygon network.
According to a press release, the new on-chain awards system is an opportunity to utilize blockchain technology in the racing games as it will feature driver statistics, podium finishes, finishing positions, and lap times, and will be updated after every race weekend.
In this regard, Jack Irving, the executive commercial director of TRD, said: “Blockchain helps us keep a permanent digital record of drivers’ achievements that they can share with their friends, family, and fans. It also allows us to develop new opportunities to introduce race fans to our partners.”
Irving pointed out that the blockchain-based records are nonfungible which means that they are trustworthy for the racing fans and drivers to see their performance after each race weekend.
After the driver’s vehicle is sent to a TRD garage, it is equipped with official Toyota racing gear. The term “gazoo” signifies a garage. This standardizes the hardware of all drivers on the grid and ensures equal footing during the race. However, it is currently unclear whether fans will have direct interaction with digital trophies or if the company plans to create any kind of digital collectibles.
As for drivers, they can conveniently access their past achievements both prior to and following events. The upcoming races for the series are scheduled to occur at the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix located in Nashville, Tennessee from August 4 to August 6.
Toyota has been engaged in the blockchain industry since 2016 when it partnered with the R3 Consortium to study and advance blockchain technology. In 2019, the company founded the Toyota Blockchain Lab.
